Do police take pictures of a gun if ?

Well my boyfriend got caught with a 22 gun. Not lisenced I know thats really wrong & he did do 10 days in jail. Its a long story but im pretty sure my step dad lied, he said he talked to the cop that arrested him and said the cop showed him a picture of the gun on the front seat. And the gun wasnt even on the front seat in was in his front counsel. He does know people but I highly doubt that cop showed him a picture thats illigal. But my boyfriend was passed out at a speedway & they woke him up & searched the car and found the gun. But would the cops really take a picture ? He was just passed out in his car and it was just a 22. I know you need evidence but they took the gun why would they need a picture? Is there any way to prove my stepdad is just liar and likes to make up stories hah ?
